Not so bad
I wanted to have my hair purple, but not too vibrant. I've read that people got funky colors, like bright pink, but I didn't. I didn't bother to bleach my hair, so I now have a nice, rich deep purple underlayer. It was messy, but came out of everything except my skin easily. That needed several toothpaste scrubs, and I do recommend toothpaste. It's cheap and easy in a pinch. It did take a bit to get it to stop running off in the shower, but I find that this is way better than Manic Panic.

fantastic, basically permanent
I've been dying my hair various colors for about 7 years now. I've tried pretty much every brand of semi-permanent pink/purple/blue/etc dye I could find but it never worked. They all wash out in a couple days and always run in the shower and make a mess. Permanent dye in these colors is practically impossible to find; the only one I found online was some brand from thailand or something. I am not too sure about using dye that I can't read the instructions on so I didn't want to try that.
The one day I encountered Splat. I thought I'd try it, why not. LOVE IT.
Well, first of all the bleach they give you is a joke, it's not even enough to bleach one section of hair. So you have to buy a box of hair bleach, but that's only like 10 bucks and will turn out really good (I recommend Garnier's 100% Color line, the box has a guy with bleached hair on it).
Anyway, onto the actual dye- yes it is messy, but what dye isn't? The process of putting it on and rinsing and trying not to drip it everywhere is basically the same as any other "temporary" dye. But the difference? It lasts. This dye is basically permanent. I've been using at for about a year now, I only have to redo it every couple months to get rid of my roots and to touch it up a bit. For the first week and a half or so, it drips in the shower a little bit. Just use an old towel to dry it off and you'll be fine. After that, it does not drip at all or anything.
The only thing I found that someone might have a problem with is the color. I use the "lusty lavender" purple, and while the dye itself is very purple, it dyes my hair pink. Like, hot pink. I love it, so I don't care (kind of funny to purposely buy purple dye to get pink hair). It's possible my hair is just weird and reacts with it or something, so I dunno.
But in summary- lasts very long (basically permanent) and looks great :)

Dyes everything BUT your hair!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a cosmetologist and have found there are some funky dyes that can be bought at your local retailer that last better than some of the professional products. I figured I would give SPLAT a try. I am so upset that I did.
I already had bleached areas on my hair so I did not need to use the bleach in the Splat kit. I applied the color and let it sit. The first thing I noticed is this dye is rather runny compared to some of the others. I had quite the mess on the counters. Secondly, this stuff turns anything it touches. Except hair. After letting it sit, I started to wash it out. And wash. And wash. And wash. The purple never stopped coming out. Finally after 30 minutes I figured I had most of it out and was satisfied. I got out only to discover that my skin wasn't pink from the hot water but from the DYE!!!!!!!!!!!! I then looked in the mirror and almost died. My hair was still the same old color. But my scalp is now NEON FREAKING PURPLE. I have to figure out what the heck to use to get it off my scalp! This is UNREAL!!
If you want a cheap color that will stay for a decent amount of time with no issues like this brand, try Color Rays. I've had nothing but GREAT luck with them!

A dye to dye anything and everything
My sister and I both bought 2 different colors of this product and we both ended up unsatisfied. My sister tried hers first and tried to get a nice purple color. My sister hated it so much she dyed her hair another normal color that very night after scrubbing all the purple off her body with lava soap. I mayself thought that instead of using my hair i would use a wig I had that was very bleached already. Well as i started dying the hair the dye was dropping on to the sink and counter and making a mess. I moved the wig to the tub but in the process began to turn the tub blue. By the time I gave up on the wig the blue dye was allover the tub. When I finally had time to scrub it it took me nearly 3 hours to clean it using comet, brillo pads and finally a bleach solution to get it clean again. I will never use this product again even if my life depended on it.

Never again will I use this. Ever. Ever, ever...
Never again will I buy this hair dye. Ever, ever, ever!
I went to HEB (a local grocery store) and bought Splat in hopes of getting my hair purple. In fact, I bought two boxes of Splat because I'd done a small amount of research prior to buying it and many people had complaints that the amount of bleach given in the box was too little and being I don't have a pixie cut and rather have hair to my shoulders- I wasn't going to risk half-a**ing the dye job by not putting the correct amount of bleach to cover my head and get it to the level they asked for in the box's instructions.
Well, I bleached my hair as the instructions ordered and got to the actual dying process. While dying my hair, two drops of purple fell onto the bathroom tile and were quite quick to stain it. I used all sorts of things to try and clean it off, even the shower-cleaning agents the Splat company's Myspace representative said to use. Finally after tons of scrubbing, it went from dark purple to a super light pink which wasn't nearly as noticeable. Now for the staining, I don't hold that against Splat in the least since after all, that's the idea of the hair dye- you WANT it to stain your hair technically.
So after covering my head in not one, but TWO, bottles of hair dye, I waited extra long to have it truly stick to my hair. (Side note: I've come to find that MANY people who often dye their hair un-natural colors recommend to let it sit extra long.) If anything, after the tile staining I had high hopes that this hair dye would stay...
BUT BOY WAS I WRONG.
Upon finally rinsing my hair out, I looked in the mirror expecting purple and found a bright pink! It was absolutely horrendous. It looked nowhere NEAR purple. Not only that, but my hair felt incredibly gross and when touched, left my palm pink! When rinsing, the water wouldn't even run clear, period. It was just more and more pink. The whole event was just downright terrible. I ended up having to waltz into Walgreens with this horrible hair color and get a burgundy red to color over it with.
My hair looks great now, but certainly no thanks to Splat. I'll never use this product again and though everyone's hair is different with some people having hair that takes the color in and others who have hair that won't... I'd say buy this with EXTREME caution, because you could be the latter of the two and you just won't know that kind of information till you're standing in front of the mirror...
Possibly in horror.
Like I was.
